in memoriam

Digital Performance2020

The life and work of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, who was assassinated in Malta in 2017, is celebrated through "In Memoriam."

Using Machine Learning, the project simulates Caruana Galizia's writing style from her blog, "Running Commentary," and serves as a digital memorial to honour her contributions.

Created in 2020, before generative language models became widely accessible and culturally ubiquitous, the archive retains the model's unstable grammar and syntax. These irregularities remain as traces of the system's constraints and the technological moment in which the work was produced.

Through exploring themes of immortality, the power of words, and individual impact, the project reflects on a significant political event in Malta, emphasising the importance of truth-seeking, justice, and the consequences of political violence.
